Sheff Wed Faces Serious Challenges, Declares New Football Authority

'We are going to be a part of football's future' - independent football regulator the new chairman

The team's ongoing struggles represent a a "significant problem" and the football regulator is aiming to acquire authority to examine team situations in similar circumstances, the recently named head the official has stated.

During an extensive discussion, the chairman, who was named to the position this week, voiced concern towards Wednesday's fanbase.

The chairman convened with four fan organizations representing the Championship side in recent days.

The football club have been experiencing difficulties in multiple areas in this season, with the club failing to pay players on time on several different times, including in the autumn.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a significant problem for EFL and a significant problem for football," Kogan told.

"Sheffield Wednesday is one of the iconic names for football in England and this week we have met fan representatives.

"We are seeking authority... which will allow us to have Wednesday and comparable cases referred to us if they need to be investigated and acted upon."

Financial Struggles and Proprietorship Status

The club's controversial proprietor Dejphon Chansiri indicated in the summer he would be prepared to relinquish control at Hillsborough, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with interested parties.

Failure to pay player wages on time in earlier this year led to sanctions by the football authorities in summer, blocking the team from conducting any transfers or loans for the subsequent signing windows, although the ban was rescinded in August.

Regulator's Perspective

The chairman stated: "The position was created for the supporters of Wednesday, teams facing challenges where supporters are loyal to a local institution that has existed throughout their lifetimes in many cases.

"I have absolute sympathy for Sheffield Wednesday, as I do for all the clubs that in modern times have encountered failure, or nearly ceased operations, for causes separate from the followers."

Inquired if the regulator could force an proprietor to divest a club if they are considered unfit, the regulator answered: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we gather the evidence and know what's going on, we will."

But the regulator clarified that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be considered the final option and the authority would rather to cooperate with proprietors.

"The last thing what we want to do is begin intervening in an particular organization, an particular chairman, without being in a position to cooperate with that owner to try and resolve the challenges confronting the team and the owner's facing," the regulator explained.

"However, realistically, when you examine the past of football, over the past few decades there have been particular chairmen, few in number, but some who have been irresponsible in the approach they have taken toward their teams and eventually decline to assume obligation for the coming years."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

The regulator engaged delegates from multiple organizations to lay out the remit of the oversight body this week and maintained it represented a "proactive meeting" with a "substantial involvement" from the grassroots to elite level.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because should mistakes occur, if the world of football gets it wrong, the remarkable development accomplished could disappear swiftly," the regulator warned.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the realm of domestic football is a huge success story - we must maintain momentum.

"Considerable investment flowing into the game and has been channeled for the past two decades, because certainty is lacking it will persist in entering the game, which is among the factors explaining I think we have to maintain a focused outlook on potential dangers and naturally, of the coming seasons."

Top Flight Apprehensions

Top flight officials resisted the establishment of an oversight body because of concerns about detrimental effects on the top-flight's competitiveness, but the regulator stated: "I fully support the achievement and development as an commercial operation of the elite league.

"I of all people understand the worry about compromising the division as a high-quality offering of the nation. But concurrently, if you consult with top flight officials after today's meeting, they would have had a significant degree of comfort -and, indeed, they have been telling us in private they have a considerable comfort."

Ideological Links

The chairman continues to confront a "thorough examination" by the public appointments commissioner after he revealed he contributed money to the political party in recent years.

The 68-year-old donated money to Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport the politician's campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I have been entirely transparent regarding my past party membership [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the regulator explained.

"I currently have no participation in any type of partisan engagement."
