In a move that pairs generosity with stringent conditions, the United States has pledged $2 billion to support UN humanitarian programmes. Yet, this aid was accompanied by a stark message for the international body: it must "evolve or perish."
A Significant Pledge Amid Wider Budget Reductions
This commitment was made during a time of major reductions in American support of global aid. Additional reductions are expected from other major contributors including European nations. The official, a senior Trump administration figure, delivered the announcement alongside the United Nations' top humanitarian official.
"This money will save countless lives," said the United Nations' relief coordinator. However, the $2 billion constitutes just a small portion of the United States' historical contributions, which were estimated at approximately $17 billion just a few years ago.
Funding with Specific Conditions
The latest US funding is not unconditional. It is earmarked for just 17 countries, including Syria, Sudan, and Haiti. Significantly, Yemen and Afghanistan have been left off the list.
The US official explained this decision by citing concerns that there, aid money were being diverted to militant groups. "President Trump will never tolerate any amount of taxpayers' money going to terrorist groups," he stated firmly.
Additionally, the stipulations explicitly rule out funding for initiatives focused on climate change, which were described as not "essential for survival" and not in "the US interest."
